Normal, guest
Renata Graw is the Founder and lead designer of Normal, a small, independent team of creative thinkers based in Chicago. Normal centers on the belief that thoughtfully designed experiences can have a profound impact on how people interpret the world. Prior to forming Normal, Graw was a Co-Founder and Partner at Plural, the award-winning Chicago studio she led for eight years.

Originally from Brazil, Renata received her BFA from the Pontificia Universidade Catolica in Rio de Janeiro and her MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She studied typography under Wolfgang Weingart at the Basel School of Design and participated in the ISIA/Urbino Summer Workshop under the mentorship of Karel Martens and Armand Mevis. Renata’s work has been featured in Communication Arts, Eye and Print magazines, and has been recognized by the AIGA 365, Art Directors Club, Type Directors Club and STA Archive.

Alexa Viscius is a designer and photographer at Normal. She holds a BFA in graphic design from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her work has been recognized by AIGA 50 books/50 Covers, the STA 100 (Society of Typographic Arts), and the TDC (Type Directors Club of New York). She has exhibited at Typeforce, Chicago and has been featured in It’s Nice That.

Crystal Zapata is a designer at Normal. She holds a BFA from Columbia College Chicago. Her work has been recognized by the TDC (Type Directors Club of New York), and the STA 100 (Society of Typographic Arts). She has exhibited at Typeforce, Chicago and has been featured in It’s Nice That.

Valerie Craig, host
Valerie Craig is a designer who is fueled by ideas, passion and people. She thrives on process, ideation, experimentation, execution and, apparently, lists.

Today, you can find her leading design at the industrial software company Uptake. As the Brand Director, she leads a kick ass team to create strategic communications that are impactful and beautiful to tell the story of the brand. Prior to Uptake Valerie served as Senior Designer at Acquity Group, a part of Accenture Interactive, where she transformed the brand’s passion into pixels and paper. For a number of years, she worked for herself (which translates to many people) creating meaningful work for clients from places like CBS Interactive to local pet training startup FetchFind to the Cheesemonger Invitational.

Valerie also serves as the VP of Programming on the AIGA Chicago Board of Directors and is an active member of the Chicago design community. She has served the Chicago chapter for more than a decade in many different roles and is honored to be a part of this rich creative community.
