AIGA Chicago and Artisan present
Freedom of Freelance
When we think of freelance, freedom often comes to mind—but freedom has a flipside. When you start your own venture, you're responsible for constructing a creative process with your stamp on it—and that's on top of the day-to-day operations.
AIGA Chicago and Artisan invite you to peek into the minds of Susan Fireside, Kyle Letendre, and Adé Hogue as we discuss process, motivation, red flags, and more in regards to freelance design. Our panelists will share tips and stories about experimenting with their own creative structure.
Mary Foyder loves to help clients plan, envision and bring content to life. An award-winning interdisciplinary design and brand strategist and IDEO alumnus with over 18 years of experience, Mary is versatile communication design leader who has worked with dozens of clients, from fortune 500 brands to top nonprofits. Her experience includes a diverse range of projects—from microfinance banking in rural Kenya to the creation and branding of a birth control support network for women. She has worked with a broad range of clients including, The Trust for Public Land, The University of Chicago, The Chicago Department of Public Health, American Express, Pepsi Co., Nike, Sara Lee, Bank of America, and The National Campaign to Prevent Teen & Unplanned Pregnancy.
No matter what the project, Mary believes in a Human Centered Design approach—great design starts with understanding the needs of individuals as well as organizations. Among the press and accolades Mary’s work has received, her work with Bedsider garnered an IDEA gold for service design and bronze for both research and design strategy, as well as a Core77 strategy and research award. The Bedsider work was also featured in the Pasadena Museum of California Art.
Susan Fireside has been igniting ideas and solving design challenges outside traditional thinking as a multi-disciplinary design director with a focus on creating modern and engaging work that elevates the full brand experience. She’s a big picture thinker that looks at the intricate details. She’s able to synthesize methods and technologies, leading through collaboration and consolidating essential research, strategy and tactics into communications that set the soul on fire.
As a creative, some of her influences are rich and beautiful textiles, architecture, nature and interior environments. She’s always passionate about learning the cultural anthropology around us and finds inspiration comes from anywhere, anyone and anything. She enjoys collaborating with other creatives to solve design challenges outside traditional thinking. Her motto is, “always keep your eyes and ears open and keep a curious mind."
Kyle Letendre is an independent lettering artist, illustrator and designer based in Chicago. He left his full-time role as a Senior Designer at Delicious Design League in March of this year, much to the dismay of his mom, but everything’s been okay so far! Kyle’s clients include Instagram, Airbnb, McDonald’s, Bud Light, Jack Daniel’s, and American Express. He teaches Expressive Type at the Chicago Portfolio School and isn’t great at ending bios.
Adé Hogue is an enthusiastic Art Director with a passion for custom lettering and photography. He has worked for companies/agencies, both large and small, to create design solutions to various problems. He enjoys exploring both the physical world, and the artistic one. He has the wonderful job of using his hands to blend the beautiful with the practical. Doing more than pushing pixels, he get to take ideas and turn them into something physical.
