Designer as Author: Nick Disabato
Nick Disabato (aka nickd) is a Chicago-based designer, publisher and avid public speaker. Designer as Author is AIGA Chicago's ongoing series dedicated to the discussion of written works and the designer-authors who create them. Sounds like a perfect match, right? Well, on November 29 it's happening—and we hope you'll come take part.

Nick plans to talk about the role of writing—especially the long-form variety—in the design profession. A bit wide open, topic-wise, but that's kind of the point. As Nick says, "There isn't enough solid criticism of what we do today, questioning both the 'what's' and the 'why's.'" How can we get out of that rut, open up the conversation, and use words to gain and share a richer understanding of design?

Nick will present some examples of where and how this kind of criticism is starting to take shape today, including Distance, a quarterly journal of design- and technology-focused essays published by the speaker himself. He will even have a few copies to share, so don't forget to bring some spare change.
