Andy Cruz of House Industries: The Process is the Inspiration

Andy Cruz is the founder and creative nerve center of House Industries, the design company born with one foot in the analog world and one in the digital. House is known for their fonts and far-reaching collaborative work with Hermès, Jimmy Kimmel, The Eames Office, Muji, Heath Ceramics, and the New Yorker. Cruz continues to experiment by exploring personal interests to fuel projects ranging from simple children’s blocks to digital fonts that help the world communicate. His work is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, and the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. Andy’s book, The Process is the Inspiration, co-authored with longtime conspirators, Rich Roat and Ken Barber, is an honest and personal look at how to turn curiosity into successful work. JJ Abrams wrote the book’s foreword.

From fonts and fashion to ceramics and space technology, Cruz will share with AIGA Chicago how a collective obsession with letters, numbers and symbols became a kaleidoscope of products, projects and partnerships. There will be a book signing after the lecture.
