In 2014 AIGA Chicago’s Education team began a partnership with Chicago Public Schools, bringing professional designers into high schools with design-focused curriculum, and then sending high school students to some of the city’s top design firms and departments. The program’s goal is to foster industry fluency and create access to the resources kids need to succeed professionally.
To date, we’ve brought panelists from One Design Company, Leo Burnett’s Department of Design, Cards Against Humanity, Morningstar, Sprout Social and 50,000feet to Prosser Career Academy on the city’s north side and Marie Sklodowska Curie Metro High School on the south side. Designers present their work and share anecdotes about the trajectory of their careers. Following the panels, students were invited to visit each studio and company during Job Shadow Day, getting a more in-depth perspective into a day in the life of a designer.
